Wine Pairing Dinner at The Grill, Grand Hyatt Doha

Before I start this post, let me just say that I’m not a wine connoisseur – I very rarely drink wine because whenever I do, I get a very bad hangover the next day. I said yes to this event invitation because it’s Grand Hyatt who invited me and they always do serve great dishes. So basically, it’s because of my gluttony which is why I was in this event in the first place. 🙂

The outdoor area of The Grill at Grand Hyatt Doha was transformed into a fine dining al fresco seating to fit the theme of the dinner. That night brought us a perfect weather – not too cold and not hot, a rare occurrence in this desert city which added up to an already great atmosphere of the place.

We started our dinner with pan fried scallops with prawn, fennel and parsnips mousseline apple foam paired with Boschendal 1685 Sauvignon Blanc. The lightness of the mousseline apple foam gave just a hint of sweet flavors to the scallops and prawn, it was incredible! The sauvignon blanc was crisp and fresh but was still too strong for my taste. The Greek Mister loved it though.

Kaffir lime crab meat ravioli lobster bisque came next. The kaffir lime lent a limey aroma and taste to the crab meat and the well-blended flavors of the smooth and creamy lobster bisque. I loved it! I’m not sure which one I like better – the first dish or this one as both tasted so delicious! It was paired with Boschendal 1685 Chardonnay 2014 which had a strong woody aroma.

Our main course came next which was honey nut crusted lamb loin, crusted potato roasted roots and red pepper collis. The lamb loin was chewy and flavorful, the medium-well slices burst with honey nut flavors which gave it a very unique taste. It was wonderful however, I was only able to finish one piece of it as I was already full. A Boschendal 1685 Shiraz 2015 was paired with it, very strong flavors and after-taste.

Wine tasting is not complete without an assortment of cheese which became our last dish for this meal. The cheese platter was paired with Boschendal 1685 Blanc De Noir, Rose 2015 which became my favorite wine among all that was served. It was light, fresh and had a hint of fruity sweetness – two bottles of this wine is now in our fridge as The Greek Mister bought it from QDC the very next day. He also loved it.

It was a great wine pairing dinner hosted by Grand Hyatt Doha. I’ve never had a wine pairing experience before but it definitely was a good introduction for me.

    I like wine, but I’m not knowledgeable enough. I do go on wine tasting with food pairings but in the end it’s your taste that counts I feel. Whatever wine you like you drink.

      I always thought that drinking wine is full of rules that you should follow to actually enjoy it. :p
