Again and again, it’s an Italian restaurant even in Bruges. Well I have an excuse here though, Pizzeria Da Mario has a great location (at the square, opposite the Belfry tower) and a very friendly staff who speaks perfect English. Besides, I didn’t order any Italian food and went Belgian all the way – mussels cooked in white wine with french fries and a glass of my favorite Belgian beer, Bellevue Kriek.
You can’t go wrong with mussels which is why I ordered it, unless of course it’s not fresh. Well thankfully, they served me a fresh one. 🙂 It was still steaming when it was served and I love the fact that my iphone was able to capture the steam coming out of it. I finished the whole bucket even if it’s quite a challenge eating it.
Ahhhhh the bellevue kriek, my favorite beer. It’s sweeter in Bruges which is how I like my beer to be.
And while I was having my lunch, it rained ice which made my stay in the restaurant longer than planned. I waited for the rain to stop of course which lasted for about 20 minutes or so. 🙁
Pizzeria Da Mario received a lot of bad reviews on tripadvisor accusing it for not serving a perfect Italian food. It’s a good thing though that I didn’t order Italian so I found the restaurant nice for its ambiance and the food they served was perfect for me. Hence in this case, I’d probably advise for you to steer away from their Italian menu and order a Belgian local food instead, you won’t regret it. :p
I was so pleased to see your lovely review and photographs. I waitressed at Da Mario years ago and am trying to get hold of the owner at the time, Christiane. I’m not sure if she’s still there. Do you have any idea? I have such great memories of my time there in that perfectly situated little restaurant.
Glad my post brought back good memories to you. Unfortunately, I only stayed there for a meal and have no idea about Christiane. I hope you find her though. 🙂
What a beautiful view from a restaurant, love the ambience and the deep red colours… and I’ve never tried that beer, but I want to now!!
It would’ve been a perfect day if it did not rain. 🙁
they call it cherry beer, it’s nice! I love it! A little sweet though.
If their mussels are as goid as they looks, I think I could also forgive them for not serving authentic Italian food:)
Haha, i am a very forgiving person specially if you serve me good food. Lol.
I love kriek beer! I was just in Belgium a couple of weeks ago. However, I went to Ghent instead of Bruges.
Ohhhhh ghent! Also in the bucket list of mine. 🙂
