Day Trips from Nice: Villefranche Sur Mer

Villefranche-sur-Mer, France

It’s our last day in the South of France and we couldn’t have chosen a better place to spend our last hours here other than the beautiful Villefranche Sur Mer. It’s only about 20 minutes drive from Nice so we won’t be stressed going back to the airport. Our flight departs late in the afternoon so we had the whole day to spend in this beautiful coastal village.

After checking out of our hotel, we first went to Chateau de Nice to compensate on the fact that we didn’t explore Nice that much during this holiday. We basked on the beautiful view of Nice from one of the many viewpoints here and also explored the Castle Cemetery nearby where Nice’s most notable personalities are buried.

We continued on our drive to Villefranche sur Mer, we picked the best day to visit it because it was the warmest day in all 5 days that we were here. It was lunch time when we arrived so the seaside restaurants were busy with diners. We sat on one of the outdoor tables with the warmth of the sun on our face, oh we’ll miss this when we go back to the gloomy and cold London.

After I had my latte, I decided to explore the village while the Greek Mister enjoys his beer. The charming old town village of Villefranche sur Mer cascades down to the sea, it reminded me of a lot of the seaside villages I’ve visited in Greece.

Lots of restaurants, bars and cafes are dotted around the village which are all charming in their own right even if they don’t have the seaview from here. Most of the buildings dates back to the 12th century painted in wonderful pastel colors splashed with some flowers overflowing from the balconies. It reminds you of summer, even it’s not summer when you’re there. 🙂

After poking around the meandering alleyways, I went back to the port to join the Greek Mister for lunch. We had a seafood feast of course, one can’t sit by the sea and not enjoy a seafood feast right? It was a great lunch, the seafood was fresh, the beer and mojito were cold and the sun was warm. It was definitely the best thing to do last as you leave this magnificent place.

Before we know it, it was time for us to go back to the airport. It was extremely hard to leave this place, we both fell in love with it quite instantly and the thought of leaving it breaks our hearts. We shall return, we both thought. When that might be, I hope soon. 🙂
