Things To Do in Santorini: Witness The Much-Awaited Sunset

Before I went to Santorini, I have encountered “watch the sunset” numerous times as one of the things that I really really must do while there. People have their own different approach to it and some do take it rather seriously. One blogger even had to climb on one of those white houses, over its roof an hour before the sun sets to have the most spectacular view. Passionate bloggers will do anything to take that one best shot of just about everything. Even risking their lives or probably risking jailed for trespassing. So I somehow had that in mind, that I really must witness this much talked about sunset in Santorini.

I dragged the boyfriend out of the beach lounger towards Oia to watch this anticipated sunset. We arrived late and the area where you are supposed to see the best view was already packed with tourists so we settled to just wait for it somewhere else. Not a very good view but will still give you a sight of it.

The splash of colors is probably what makes the sunset in Santorini so much prettier. The predominant hues of blues and whites splashed with some other pastel colors of the buildings and the reds of bougainvilleas here and there combined with the orange sunset sky, can you imagine how pretty it must have been? Well sadly, you only have to imagine it as I do not have photos. My iphone camera sucks taking sunsets and evening shots so yeah, you’ll just have to imagine it. Funny thing was, after the sunset – the tourists gave it a round of applause. I thought it was a myth, I thought it was just a joke but right after the sunset – I heard people clapping. It’s that pretty in their eyes, probably.

Personally for me though, the best place to watch the sunset in Santorini is at a famous seafood restaurant called Giorgaros in Akrotiri. There you will have the sweeping view of the sea and you’ll be able to witness the sun setting in the middle of it. I have never seen something like it, the sun literally going inside the waters of the sea as it sets. As you’re viewing it from the top, it kinda looks like the sun is diving into the waters. It’s magnificent.
