Being only 45-min away, Great Falls in Maryland and Virginia is a great day out from Washington DC. The only downside is, Great Falls is not at all near to any public transportation routes so you really have to have your own car to get there. It is absolutely worth it though.
My sister who is very familiar with the place took us to the Great Falls’ Maryland side. There’s an entrance fee of USD5 per vehicle which isn’t really a lot. Being a weekend, the place was packed however as the park itself is huge – you won’t feel like it’s crowded. There were numerous families in the area some of them were all geared up for a hike. As for us, we were in our normal gym clothes since we don’t really have any intention to go for a hike. :p
We took the walking trail towards the lookout point of the Great Falls. At some point during the trail, you’ll have to pass by some bridges with the strong current of the river beneath you, that made my knees shake. I have slight fear of heights. Yaiks! But because the view around me was spectacular, I somehow managed to overcome this fear and took loads of photos.
The view from the overlook point took my breathe away. Great Falls really did live up to its name, it was amazing! No words can describe its beauty so I’ll just let the photos do the talking for me.
It was a great dayout for families and nature enthusiasts, I’ll definitely take the challenge of taking the Billy Goat Trail one day. 🙂
