Beautiful Cotswold Pubs: The Trout Inn

A unique British pub in Lower Wolvercote, The Trout Inn is a gastropub serving quality dishes in a pretty riverside setting.

Just a few minutes’ drive away from our hotel The Jurys Inn in Oxford, we had our first pub meal for this holiday at The Trout Inn. I couldn’t have chosen a better pub to kickstart our holiday!

We passed by a couple of cute pubs on our way and were actually quite tempted to just dine there instead but the Greek Mister didn’t really feel comfortable leaving the car in the public car park area of the town. So we continued our drive not realizing that The Trout Inn is very close by and not only does it have its own private parking area, it’s also located in the most charming place – by the River Thames.

Our dinner reservation was for 7:30 in the evening but we arrived at 6pm for some drinks. The staff immediately informed us that for drinks, we can have it at the pub garden but we’ll need to go inside for food. It worked well for us because it was quite chilly that night. I, of course, took dozens of photos while there.

We were led to our table when our dinner reservation was up and I was quite disappointed to see that its menu is exactly the same as The Harts Boatyard and The Albany, two of our local pubs in Kingston. They belong to the same group of pubs which isn’t really a big deal but I was just hoping that I’d be able to try new dishes during this holiday.

We normally don’t have starters and just jump into main course but we were both quite hungry then so we ordered some bread and olives to fill us up while waiting for our mains. For our main course, we both had rotisserie half chicken which both of us never had before in The Harts Boatyard nor at The Albany and as it turned out – it’s actually the best rotisserie chicken we’ve ever had. The meat was so juicy while the skin was crispy. It was remarkable, I can’t believe we’ve never had this dish before in the two local pubs that we have.

While the food was great, I must say that the service wasn’t really good. It was quite busy that night so there was a long wait for food. I also ordered an extra serving of fries which came just as we were finishing our meal and it was no longer hot nor crispy. Despite it all, I still loved our meal!
