My first bagel experience was in an unassuming, very small bagel shop in New York. It was so small that I don’t even remember its name. All I remember was we grabbed a plain bagel from the shop and ate it on our way to Central Park. It was love at first bite, I couldn’t believe how tasty a round bread can be (not a big fan of bread, I’m Asian – I prefer rice). Since then, I’m always on the lookout for a bagel as good as that one which turned out to be an impossible task.
My blogger friend Quest and Mark invited me to be her plus one in a bagel tasting event at The Great American Bagel Bakery in Al Hilal a few days ago. I was more than excited to say yes because 1. it’s my first time to be a plus one in an event which comes with the perk of not having to write about it (although I’m writing about it now) and 2. I wanted to see if their bagel will be as good as the one I had in New York.
The shop that we went to was in Woqod Petrol Station in Al Hilal, a rather odd place to host a tasting event I thought but I came for the bagels so I didn’t really mind where the location was. The Great American Bagel offers different bagel flavors and bagel sandwiches. We had 4 kinds of each – plain bagels and bagel sandwiches. As the staff laid it all to our table, I can already feel my trousers tightening on my waist area. So much for all the squats I’ve done that morning.
That’s a whole lotta bread I know, in our defense – we didn’t finish all of it but we did try everything. The plain bagels unfortunately didn’t meet my bagelpectations – it didn’t have that malty sweetness which is what sets bagels apart from other kinds of bread. It wasn’t very chewy as well which is how a good bagel is supposed to be like. I did love the sesame bagel though, but that’s probably because I’m a huge fan of sesame seeds.
Now the bagel sandwiches are a totally different story. What they have lacked on the true bagel experience (according to myself), they made up for it with the fresh ingredients in their sandwiches. Generous spread of cream cheese brought us to carbohydrate coma which I didn’t really mind, it was worth all the inches I gained on my waistline. My favorite sandwich was chicken caesar on asiago and surprisingly, I found their veggie supreme really tasty too. I’m not a veggie person and I almost always avoid having anything which says “veggie/vegetarian” in it, but I wouldn’t mind having The Great American Bagel’s veggie supreme over and over again.
I have yet to find a bagel experience here in Doha as good as the one I had in New York but The Great American Bagel’s sandwiches would be a good fit for me now specially since is it now included in The Entertainer App 2016. Buy 1 take 1 bagels from now. YAY! Right, time to burn all the bagel calories consumed.
