“I’m going to have dinner with Tiffany on Tuesday” I told The Greek Mister and he replied by singing the song “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” which ultimately became THE song of the day for both of us. Yeah, we’re not your usual lovey dovey couple. We’re weirdos!
So I finally met Tiffany of A Girl and Her Passport blog and the funny thing was, we’ve been following each other on all social media accounts (more specifically snapchat) that when we met each other it felt to us like we’ve known each other for a very long time. The power of social media, yes? I proposed to have dinner at Nonna Zanon which of course I found through my Entertainer App. It would be a first time for both of us to try it out so that’s actually very good, no prior experiences mean we’re in for a foodie adventure.
We arrived 10 minutes earlier than the opening time of the restaurant so we had to wait just outside its huge door. When we entered at 7pm, the team was still doing a briefing for the day I think and we disturbed them in the middle of it. Two very hungry women coming through!!! The decor of the restaurant has that industrial feel to it with its high-ceilings and lamps hanging low shaped like something I can’t say on here. I mentioned that to Tiffany just as we were finishing our meal because I thought it would be too inappropriate to disclose such observations during a first meeting. You should visit the restaurant and see for yourself meanwhile, I’ll give you this photo – maybe you’ll know what I’m talking about.
The staff was too eager to take our orders and was standing right by our table as we looked through their menu. I felt a bit pressured to choose the correct dish and up until this time, I don’t think I was able to go through the menu properly as I was too agitated to make a choice. After placing our orders though, an amuse-bouche was given to us in the form of mozzarella cheese balls (I think) served on a polished rock – a very welcome surprise from Nonna Zanon. I wanted to take the rock home with me but I don’t think there’s a way to do that without them noticing it.
For starters, we had fried rice balls which was good. It had tomatoes and mozzarella cheese in it which gave it a pasta-like flavor. For our main course, we both chose something from their daily menu – pasta of the day for Tiffany while I had the pizza of the day which was a margherita pizza with anchovies and tomatoes.
Pizza smelled so good as soon as it was brought to our table and it already looked promising even before I tasted it. The crust was thin and crispy while the mozzarella cheese gave it a very juicy and tasty flavor. The anchovies gave it a good kick of salty and fishy taste – a good contrast to the usual pizza flavor. I loved it, probably one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had in Doha not just because of the anchovies flavor but the pizza as a whole. They cooked it perfectly!
When I asked for the bill, I forgot to remind them that I’d be using the Entertainer voucher but our server remembered it and already deducted one main course on our bill when she brought it. I don’t know about you but that rarely ever happens to me – someone is actually paying attention and that’s great service if you ask me.
It’s definitely not the first time I’d be visiting Nonna Zanon as I’m very keen to try all the other dishes that they have. Next time, I’m going to bring a better camera to take better photos of the place and the food because let’s all admit it – the photos I posted above suck.
