We’re a big fan of big, open, outdoor spaces (an added bonus if it’s surrounded by a greenery) and Doha being a very small city – I thought nothing as such exist here. Spikes Restaurant at Doha Golf Club proved us wrong though which came to us as a welcome surprise. Facing the golf course itself, it’s definitely a change of scenery to enjoy an afternoon in compared to the congested bars and restaurants dotted within the city.
We went to Doha Golf Club for the first time last Saturday, with nothing in particular in our mind of what to expect from it. “It can’t be that bad”, I told the Greek Mister who’s a bit pessimistic of driving all the way to the golf club which apparently was not that far away from our house. It was drizzling that day which made going out of the house a bit harder for us – it’s the perfect weather to hibernate in the comforts of your home so to speak but I really wanted to go there for the longest time as I’ve been told how very different it is from all the other places in Doha.
My friend who recommended it to me was right, it was definitely different from all the restaurants we’ve been to – a break from the city indeed. The ambiance is fantastic! A wide open space without high-rise buildings blocking your view and the well-trimmed grass of the golf course is what you see as you enjoy a glass of beer or two. Yes, it’s licensed – alcohol is served! It somehow reminded me of 261 Restaurant at the Els Club in Dubai which is also a restaurant in the clubhouse of the golf course.
Service was ok, food was surprisingly good. I had a club sandwich while The Greek Mister had a black and blue burger. Nothing extraordinary about my club sandwich except that it tastes like how it’s supposed to and the portion was generous. The Greek Mister’s burger on the other hand was juicy and very tasty. It’s definitely much better than a particular restaurant in Doha which specializes in burgers. :p They were offering a buffet option for QR99 per person that Saturday too but we opted to order from their a la carte menu.
They also serve a great mojito! I’ve always been wary of ordering cocktails from restaurants which are too casual as it always comes out bad – not at Spikes Restaurant though as I think I can even consider it as one of the best mojitos I’ve ever had in Doha.
It’s a very casual restaurant (shorts are allowed) with a ’90’s music softly playing in the background. You don’t have to be a member to access the restaurant but they do require your ID before entering – which is the norm in Doha anyway. It’s definitely a great place to spend your weekends in – great ambiance, food and drinks in a very relaxed environment, even The Greek Mister who was pessimistic about it before going there decided that we stay longer to fully enjoy it.
