Thursdays is that one day of the week when almost all of the all-day dining restaurants in different hotels here in Doha are having a seafood-themed buffet. I’m not really sure if it’s just a coincidence or has been agreed upon by these properties but whatever the case may be, I think this is good for the diners. Each restaurant must have something different to offer to entice us. Competition is always good, I think.
I was invited to try out Olives Restaurant at Concorde Hotel Doha for their seafood night last Thursday. Priced at QR215 per person, I thought it’s a little steep considering alcohol isn’t served in this property however, I did check the prices of the other seafood buffet in the city and everything is almost the same price. So I guess it all boils down to the selection of food they serve to see if it’s worth the money.
Olives Restaurant is located on the Ground Floor of Concorde Hotel Doha, it was a well-lit restaurant which possibly could use dimmer lights for ambiance. Apart from 3 other tables occupied, the whole place was quite empty. There were a lot more staff than diners the night I went there which if you ask me may be good because service was definitely attentive and quick. It did get busier though later that evening, families with children made the place a bit livelier.
The selection of food was not huge but of decent amount. They do take “seafood night” seriously as all of the dishes were seafood-themed including their salads. (Shrimp pasta salad anyone?) They also have two land-based dishes served, chicken and beef which I think would be a good consolation for a non-seafood fan who got lost and found himself in this restaurant on a Thursday night.
One thing I noticed in their selection was that shrimps were in almost all the dishes not that I’m complaining because I do love shrimps but it could definitely use more variety of seafood. They also have fresh seafood and live cooking station – I chose to have a grilled whole fish, lobster tails and of course shrimps. It definitely was the best plate I’ve had that night as everything was so fresh and very tasty.
It was an ok experience to be honest, not bad and also not something I would really seek out for a Thursday night. It could use a bit more ambiance – probably some music? Or lighting perhaps? Variety of seafood served could also be improved. It’s good for families with children though as it’s a bit more family oriented – they even have a small play area at the end of the dining hall and the servers I think were all trained to be friendly and accommodating to children. I do highly recommend two things about this restaurant – the grilled seafood plate and the outstanding service we received.
