One of the things that I like about living in Doha is because of its very diverse population with nationalities from different countries, we are then subjected to a very diverse culinary scene as well. Having said that, each restaurants will have something in store for us residents when the country they represent is having a fiesta! Case in point, a Rio Carnival celebration in the Brazilian restaurant – Ipanema, Marriott Marquis City Center Hotel.
To celebrate this, Ipanema restaurant became a bit more vibrant and colorful than it already is on a normal day. They also flew in the celebrated Chef Gayber Silveira from Sao Paulo to give us authentic Brazilian creations for this period. I was invited to attend a cooking demonstration with Chef Gayber and frankly, who am I to say no to an invitation which promises authentic Brazilian flavors from a Chef they flew in from Brazil?
He prepared a three-course meal for us which included a traditional Bahian main course called Mouqueca De Peixe E Camarao – a tropical fish stew enriched with coconut milk. I’m used to eating dishes with coconut milk (being Asian) and I had to fight the urge to ask for a cup of rice from an Ipanema staff as I was reminded of all the dishes I used to eat as a child in the Philippines with the creamy taste of coconut milk. The dessert they served was amazing too! Banana with ice cream and caramelized cashew nuts, yum! I’m not into desserts but that was irresistible and once again, it did have a similar taste to one of our desserts as well in the Philippines.
It was a great Brazilian event by Ipanema as always, a good introduction of all the culinary wonders that one can experience while in Brazil. Here’s a quick video of our meal:
