Whenever someone is traveling to the USA, it’s normally the big cities that they’d like to visit. That was what’s in my mind as well as places to see until I realized that this country has a magnificent countryside that everyone should take time to explore. The Maryland state has a lot of quaint little towns to explore which is what we’ve been doing since I came here.
A couple of weeks ago, my sister and I went for a drive towards Cumberland. It was my first time to drive that far, in a highway. Funny because the husband never let me drive his car when we were in Dubai so I never got to put my driving skills to use. Since I came to the US though, my mom and my sister were both too eager to let me drive for them. To give them a break from driving specially my sister who drives 6 hours per day to go to work. :p Cumberland was about an hour away from where my mom lives so it wasn’t that very long. The scenery was fabulous on the way.
Cumberland also known as the Queen City is a historic place which was once a stronghold for Union Forces during the American Civil War. It used to be the second largest city in the state after Baltimore however it suffered a decline after the World War II. The city now reinvented itself as they focused to grow the arts and tourism community of the place. It does have a huge potential to be one of the major tourist destinations of the area.
It was the weekend before halloween when we went to Cumberland so the pedestrian area of Baltimore Street was packed with trick-or-treaters. The shops are giving out candies to kids and there was a DJ in the middle of the street to make the atmosphere more vibrant and fun for the families. I can only imagine how this place looks like during the festive season of Christmas.
It was a fun day out for my sister and I. Knowing that it’s only an hour’s drive away from where I’m staying is enough for me to be giddy as I can easily go back to Cumberland. Probably when it’s snowing and I’m still here in the US, I would love to see the Baltimore Street covered in snow. 🙂
