New Menu Tasting at Carluccio’s, The Pearl, Doha

An outdoor seating area with a quiet and very laidback ambiance, that’s the kind of restaurant I’m always looking for during the winter months in the Middle East. The Greek Mister and I are HUGE fans of outdoor dining which we both think adds up to a great meal experience. Good thing that there’s a myriad of outdoor dining options to choose from here in Doha, one of which is Carluccio’s at The Pearl Qatar.

I was invited to try out some of the dishes which are to be included in the new menu of Carluccio’s last week and I couldn’t possibly say no to it specially since we have had good experiences from this restaurant whenever we dined in one of their branches in Dubai.

On the day though, the staff seem to be unaware that I was there to try out the new dishes. There was quite a confusion which led to us waiting for a good 10 minutes without being assisted by anyone. None of the staff knew about the new menu that I was talking about so even I got a little bit confused if I was at the right restaurant. Hah!

I have to admit though that I was getting frustrated so we decided to just get something from their regular menu since we were both extremely hungry. Good thing though that the staff who we spoke to last checked with their manager about the new menu that I was talking about and finally, the manager came to our table and told us that he’s been expecting us. Well, good to know that we were at the right restaurant after all.

Service became better immediately afterwards and without wasting any more time, dishes started coming to our table. We started with mushroom fritti which is crispy fried mix mushrooms with garlic and parsley. The Greek Mister wasn’t a big fan of it but I on the other hand, loved every bit of it. My unprofessional taste palate loves anything fried, not the healthiest option I know but I would definitely have this dish again the next time I visit Carluccio’s.

Primavera risotto came next, it’s a fresh vegetarian risotto of courgette, leeks, peas, carrots, fresh tomato, green beans with butter and parmesan cheese. I’m generally not a risotto fan but this dish was creamy and very tasty. I think it would satisfy someone who loves risotto just like The Greek Mister who loved it.

Our next dish was pizza with smoked salmon, mascarpone cream, mozzarella, courgette and chives drizzled with lemon oil. Smoked salmon on a pizza? It doesn’t sound appetizing for me and to be very honest, my tongue didn’t approve of it either. The Greek Mister wasn’t a big fan of it as well but he was more put off by the flavor of lemon in it – which my palate failed to taste. It is interesting though, it might work out for some but just not ours. Also, I’d probably prefer for the thin pizza dough to be crispier than how it was served to us.

As a side dish, spicy broccoli was offered to us which The Greek Mister and myself loved! The Greek Mister was hesitant at first to take a bite of it because of the word “spicy” on the menu but then it wasn’t spicy at all. The garlic flavor and almond flakes made a delectable dish out of the broccoli.

We ended our meal with a panna cotta, set vanilla cream with fresh raspberries and coulis. I love the gelatinous texture of the vanilla cream and the fact that it wasn’t very sweet.

The outdoor dining area was busy the whole time we were there, I guess a lot of D-town residents are making the most out of the great weather we now have just like The Greek Mister and myself. And with Carluccio’s incredible view of the marina, I would say it’s definitely one of the prime spots to dine at The Pearl.

Carluccio’s new menu will be available by December. Which of the above dishes would you love to try?

Your blog is so cool! I’m looking at flights to Kathmandu and planning a layover in Doha. Hopefully I can see the city.
