It was a humid day, a normal inconvenience for all the residents of Dubai for the month of June. I was at Madinat Jumeirah with some friends. I just joined them for awhile as I wait for my date that night. He was late. He got lost he said. I didn’t mind because I had company anyway, thank goodness. Frankly, I was not really looking forward to the date as I only agreed to it because my roommate will be out and I didn’t want to be left by myself on a weekend.
Let me tell you about my date.
How we met:
Well, this will probably be a shock to some people as I have contorted this story many a times. Back then, I was ashamed to say the truth of how we met but I think it’s about time that the truth be told. It was a cyber romance, well actually not romance per se since the only communication we’ve had on the interwebs were mostly in the lines of “hey! wanna go out?” or “hey! wanna beer?” and these innuendos were mostly coming from his end. Yes, I said it. He asked me out a couple of times online and if you’re his friend, reading this blog, this is the truth. Believe me, not whatever he’s telling you. :p Anyhow, it all started in MYSPACE. Do you remember that? It was like Facebook but a little more cooler? Until everybody went to Facebook and MYSPACE got somehow lost in space? Anyhow, so yes. We met on MYSPACE. During that time, I have just gotten out of a pseudo-relationship and I was not really in the mood of meeting anyone because frankly, I was already tired of meeting people, getting to know them, liking them and then finding out in the end that the guy is a douchebag who was checking his MYSPACE account for new messages while he was still on a date with me. Yes, it happened to me and no, the current boyfriend didn’t do it. Someone else did.
Anyhow, so the third or fourth time that he asked if I want to go out I said yeah, why not? I have no plans for the day and my roommate was going out as well. I arranged for us to meet in Madinat Jumeirah (my favorite place) because my roommate was going there and I was planning to share the cab fare with her. Hehehe. So off we went to Madinat Jumeirah.
That photo was taken as I was waiting for him to arrive, not that I was documenting the date itself (oh please!!) but because I was wearing my roommate’s clip-on earrings and I was just trying to show it off. LOL. So finally, he arrived and I met him at Barzar. The first thing which came to my mind when I first saw him was: HOLY CRAP HE’S TALL! Mind you, I am actually attracted to tall guys. In the Philippines, I am considered tall so finding a guy taller than I am when I’m wearing heels is quite a hassle which is why when I saw him, I was sure that we were on the right track. LOL. Second thing which came to my mind was, he’s
cute handsome gorgeous. Yes, gorgeous was the right word. At least for my eyes. So basically, to cut the long story short, I was already physically attracted to him when I first saw him.
The night progressed and we both were enjoying each other’s company that we didn’t even realize that it was already 1am and he had to drive back to Fujeirah, a good 2 hours away from Dubai. We’ve passed that boundary of casual pleasantries and I looked forward to seeing him again. I like the fact that he’s humble and nice, not at all arrogant and he makes sense in most of what he’s saying. They say that what matters is what’s inside and physical appearance should not even be a first priority, well if it was a baseball game – it was a home run for me. 🙂
A few years later after that first meeting, I asked him what was his first thought when he saw me on our first date. His response was: OH GOD! I’M DATING A 16-YEAR OLD! Well, that’s the Asian genes working – we look younger than our real age. LOL.
Four years later, we are still together and I’m very glad that I agreed to meet him that day as it was probably the best decision I’ve ever done while here in Dubai. In a place where finding someone real is almost an impossible task, I found him. He who is not only real but an all-around good guy. Of course we have our differences but we’re able to agree to disagree in most of them. LOL.
We were having dinner a few weeks ago and the subject of “luck” was thrown to the table which I said I don’t believe in and to which he said he does. Then I realized, I am actually lucky that I found him. My friends who know him will say the same thing. I bet you will too. 🙂
