The boyfriend picked me up from a Saturday work duty and he was thirsty for a
alcoholic drink. Since we were nearby and I’ve been dying to check the place out, I convinced him to go to Bapas at The H Hotel in Sheikh Zayed Road. He laughed at the name but I think it’s quirky and somehow catchy. :p I recently found out just as I write this entry that it has been renamed to Brussels Belgium Bar and Bistro.
We arrived in an empty bar but since it was a Saturday and still quite early, it was understandable. The decor was cozy – dark wood furniture with high ceilings, it reminded me of a cigar lounge we went to once in Thailand. Smoking area is only at the bar and the high tables so the boyfriend chose the high tables. Let it be noted though that the high seats were very comfortable in Bapas which rarely is the case. Hah!
Being a Belgian bar, of course they had my favorite beer – Belle Vue Kriek which became my poison for the evening. The boyfriend settled for Stella Artois. The menu wasn’t very extensive – tapas, some mains and of course mussels. It won’t be a Belgian bar if they don’t serve mussels.
The boyfriend had bite size meatballs in tomato sauce and garlic toast and cheesy fries. I ordered shrimp caesar salad as I’m still on my pseudo-diet. To be very honest, I was surprised with the quality of food that they served. The meatballs was good and very tasty, yes I tasted it despite of the pseudo-diet. I can’t help myself since the boyfriend’s reaction after the first bite was tempting. My caesar salad, as lame as it sounds, was actually very tasty too. The lettuce was crisp and fresh with just the right amount of dressing.
We left the place still almost empty, it’s hard to believe that such a lounge with a promising atmosphere and great food isn’t as busy as it should be.
