Doha, Qatar | Express Lunch at Market by Jean-Georges, W Doha

Market by Jean-Georges at W Doha has been getting a lot of attention these days because of their now very famous Supper Club which I have yet to try. As always, I’m being a loser. Always the last one to try something fabulous in this city.

We did try their express lunch the other day though which is just as popular, it was the only restaurant I’ve ever had the pleasure of dining in for lunch which was almost full. Wait, I’m mistaken – I did go to another almost-full restaurant for lunch before – the Spice Market in the same hotel. Yes, W Doha is THE place to be for your dining pleasures in the city. Hard to argue with that.

We were the first ones to arrive at exactly 12nn and no more than 10 minutes later, the place immediately became busy with diners in their corporate attires. A reservation is definitely a must.

Express Lunch menu was short and straightforward, for the price of QR98 per person you get to have a complete 3-course meal. Choices may not be as varied as the normal menu but it covers a whole lot of dishes for you to choose from.

I chose to have the crispy calamari as my appetizer. It’s my favorite appetizer in Market by Jean-Georges as it’s always perfectly cooked – crispy, not at all soggy with the right amount of (salty) flavor. You can never go wrong with this dish.

I had the slowly cooked salmon as my main course which was perfect! The salmon meat was firm yet soft (huh?) with an itty bitty tiny hint of sweetness in its meat. I’m not very good in explaining the taste of a dish but this salmon right here was phenomenal it deserves a round of applause for being so delicious.

Appetizers and main course were both perfect so we waited for the dessert with anticipation. My lunch date and I both ordered salted caramel ice cream sundae which I had before during my previous visit to Market by Jean-Georges. I remember how gorgeous it looked like, how it wasn’t so sweet because the nuts sprinkled on it made a beautiful contrast to the sweetness of the sundae and the caramel popcorn. And then the dish came.

At first sight, I knew it was going to be sweet but that didn’t even prepare me for the sugar overload when I had my first bite. I’m not really into sweets in general but as I remembered my previous experience of having this dessert, it didn’t make the hair at the back of my neck stand up with its sweetness just as it did this time.

It was swimming in chocolate fudge sauce and the ice cream flavor, the generous amount of caramel popcorn made it even sweeter than it already was. It also didn’t have enough nuts to make a contrast to the sweetness of it, it was just sugar after sugar after sugar. Needless to say, I didn’t finish it and even my sugar-loving lunch date wasn’t able to finish hers as well.

Service was good. Although it was an express lunch designed for people who only had a few minutes for their lunch break, staff were observant enough and figured out that we’re not really in a hurry and we’d like to enjoy our meal in our own pace. We didn’t feel rushed at all.

Apart from the extremely sweet dessert, the whole meal experience was good. The dessert didn’t really change my mind of how I feel about this place, I can always skip dessert or choose something else from their menu. I wouldn’t let that one dish make me lose the chance of trying out all the other delicious dishes they have at Market by Jean-Georges. Absolutely going back for supper club.

    Looks delicious.
That dessert looks like it is the biggest of all three courses, and very very sweet.

Hahaha! That’s true! It’s the biggest and very sweet, not for people who are on a diet like me. :p
