Do you have a particular restaurant which you keep going back to even if you’re not really getting the best experience from it? It’s like you’re drawn to it because you want to love it. It may be because the ambiance is so great or a particular dish is so good that you’d want to ignore everything else that they lack. I do have that feeling towards Trader Vic’s in Hilton Doha.
I got so excited to see their Facebook promotion for a buy 1 take 1 brunch that I immediately booked it without even asking The Greek Mister if he’d like to go. Thankfully, he was also in the mood for a brunch that weekend.
We already had our Friday brunch there before and as far as I can remember, the food was great but the service was not. They also had a little confusion with how their Friday brunch works when it comes to ordering the main courses. But even after all those things, I remember that I still had a great time there so we bravely went back hoping that they were able to improve/change things from our first visit.
We arrived 30 minutes late which is a very serious offense if you’re going to a Friday brunch. You’ve got to make the most out of the eat-and-drink-all-you-can deals that being late is wasting precious minutes of it. The place was surprisingly empty but I thought maybe we were still too early for it however, only a few more tables got occupied after we came. Not even the Facebook promotion was able to make this outlet full for the brunch.
Service improved drastically compared to our first visit! They were quick and fast with our orders, very different from the first time that we went there when we had to wait 15 minutes for our drinks. The outlet manager was also very visible all throughout the brunch helping her staff with delivering food and clearing up tables. (Kudos to you Ms. Anastasia!)
The Greek Mister loves Trader Vic’s brunch because of two things: 1. They deliver the food to your table instead of having the normal buffet-style brunch. and 2. They have the best cocktails in Doha. Mai tai of course was their welcome drink for all their Friday brunch guests, that’s what they’re famous for.
Trader Vic’s Friday brunch is a la carte style, a menu is handed over to you but this is only for your information as they are going to deliver each and every dishes on their menu. Except for the main dishes which you can have only one at a time to avoid food wastage. However, it is unlimited too so you can order as much main dishes as you can handle.
During our first visit, I highly enjoyed the food which made me want to go back to their brunch. Service may not have been perfect then but I went there to be fed great food which they were successful on. This time however, they may have improved their service but the food quality went down.
To start off, their sushi rolls were too soggy that it all looked and tasted like it’s been rolled for a few days and were sitting inside a fridge waiting to be served. It didn’t look and taste fresh at all.
I remembered from my first visit that the island tidbits platter was enjoyed by everyone on our table however this time, I can’t seem to find a reason why we enjoyed it in the first place. To be fair, I still somehow liked the crispy prawns from that platter.
Thankfully though, the beef cho cho was as great as I remembered it to be. We had fun grilling it over our mini hibachi flame.
For our main course, we had Barbary Duck, mixed chili sea food and a cup of rice. Both dishes were ok, nothing special about it except probably for the crispy skin of the duck. In normal cases, I’d finish any seafood dish in no time but I was already too full to enjoy the mixed chili sea food. The Greek Mister finished it.
The cocktails however were perfect everytime we ordered it. We both started with their Mai Tais but then I changed my drink to Eastern Sour while The Greek Mister had Suffering Bastard. I suffered with a headache though afterwards, not him. Hah!
The only dish we really really loved was the desserts! The warm chocolate fondant tasted sooo good that we had to order one more round for the two of us. It was the only dish they served which made us want to order more.
By the time we finished the brunch, the place was still as empty as when we started it. I was really disappointed since I was really looking forward to it based on the great food experience that we’ve had the first time. Seeing an empty place for a Friday brunch also somehow affects your mood all together. It’s supposed to be festive, it’s supposed to be fun, it’s supposed to get crazy but there were only a few of us in the restaurant that time. Maybe they should lower down the cost to attract more diners.
Will I go back? YES! I’m that crazy! I don’t know why but there’s something about it which makes me want to give it another chance over and over again until I have finally validated my special liking to this place. Ok I admit, I go back for their fantastic drinks but I would want to have more reason than that to go back for next time.
