InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has launched its Culinary Journey promotion
For this month, the works of the renowned, Michelin-starred Chef Takagi Kazuo is to be featured. Famous for his Kyoto-inspired dishes which reflects the season and unfold cultural tales, this is a dinner invitation I can’t and wouldn’t miss. So last night, I braved the peak-hour traffic going towards Crowne Plaza Doha to join the IHG Culinary Journey to Kyoto.
Crowne Plaza Doha’s Executive Chef Dominique Morin and his team recreated Chef Takagi’s dishes in a 3-course meal menu. For appetizers, we had tartar yellow tail tuna sashimi and crispy vegetable and seafood tempura. Although they didn’t have the typical tempura sauce with water, dashi, mirin and soy sauce – I still enjoyed the tempura more than the sashimi. I’m not the biggest fan of sashimi though so that explains a lot.
For our mains we had Japanese pepper beef with foie gras dengaku and miso-marinated grilled cod. The steak was grilled to perfection and the foie gras’ rich taste complimented the meat so well that I had to eat it very slowly to really savor the taste. It was definitely the highlight of this dinner for me. I went home with that dish in my mind, I will be dragging The Greek Mister for a dinner there for that dish alone.
I also love their miso marinated grilled cod as miso soup is a favorite of mine. However, the fishy taste of the cod was quite too strong for my taste buds. I’m sure that that’s how it’s supposed to taste like but it just didn’t work well for me.
I’m not a big fan of desserts but the fruit anmitsu and green tea ice cream was something very different for my palette. A delightful combination of different textures and flavors including the jelly, sweet fruits and green tea ice cream. The flavor of the green tea ice cream somehow made a distinct contrast to the sweetness of the syrup and fruits. I finished the whole serving which is very unusual for a non-dessert eater like I am.
It was a fabulous dinner hosted by Crowne Plaza Doha – great food and good company. I’m already looking forward to where they would take us for the next culinary journey.
