Dance Fit ME | Get Serious, Have Fun

March 7, 2013

So my search for a good dance class is over, FINALLY! As many of you know, I made myself my own guinea pig to try out different dance schools around Dubai which offers ballet classes for adults. There were a lot of mishaps along the way and when I ran out of options for ballet classes, I broadened my horizon and even tried out zumba which is the latest craze. If you don’t know what zumba is then you’re probably under a huge boulder of rock and you need help.

If you think that it’s easy and it’s not real exercise, you’re wrong! Zumba is an exhilarating, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning, sweat-inducing, shortness-of-breathe-causing, fun and dance fitness party. It’s not for the faint of hearts, literally. You can’t and should not do it if you’ve got some heart problems. The first time I tried it, I thought my heart is going to explode and that was only after 10 minutes of the class.

I searched for a zumba class in Dubai and there were just too many here. I short-listed those classes based on these criteria:

1. There should be a nearby metro station which is of walkable distance to where the zumba class is being held.
2. The price of the class should not be more than AED50, which I think is the most reasonable price.
3. The gym/dance school must have a prominent internet presence (updated facebook page or website).
4. The facebook messages sent to them or the phone calls made to them must be answered in a timely manner.

The first class that was shortlisted was the one with Dance Fit. The nearest metro station is the First Gulf Bank (hooray for me because I live in Al Barsha and it’s on my way home), the price for each class is AED50 which can still get it cheaper if you take one of their 60-day plans, they do have an updated Facebook page and a functioning website and last of all the email I sent them was answered in a matter of 5 minutes. I tried to call the phone number on their website as well however, it was unanswered at the time. It doesn’t matter though since I got all the information I needed from the email I received from them.

Since zumba is not really my forte and I’ve no clue whatsoever about any latin dances, I didn’t want to look like a fool in the studio dancing crazily all by my sorry self. So I dragged some of my friends (Romanian, Saudi and Kenyan – yep, we’re a very odd group) to join me for the class so I have someone to just laugh it out if ever a clown is about to be created out of myself when the class starts. We took the zumba cardio class with Monica not knowing that it was an advanced class. Monica actually made me feel at ease of myself, she’s friendly and she definitely knows what she’s doing. The steps that she’s doing are very easy to follow and not very repetitive. And the fear that I had of making a fool out of myself was gone because when you’re there in the class, all you’ll worry about is to follow your instructor and you wouldn’t even see what others are doing. I was too busy keeping up with the steps and enjoying it that I forgot the fact that I have two left feet when it comes to Latin dances. After that one class, I didn’t even try all the other classes that I have listed down because I knew I found the one. I’ve been going to Monica’s class since then, she’s changing her routine almost every week which is good because it wouldn’t make you feel bored. Her class is always full which is the reason why I have procrastinated on this blog for so long because I didn’t want more people to join her class as there won’t be enough space left for me. LOL. They do have some other classes on offer, one of which is the Amazing Abs that I want to try and also Zumba Toning. The timings for both are just too early for me so I’m not sure if I can make it. After over a month of attending their class, I finally decided to buy their 10 classes card worth AED450 which means I get to pay only AED45 per class, 5 dirhams cheaper if you are to pay it individually.

Pricing Plan:
AED50 for One Time Entry
AED450 for 10 Classes Card valid for 60 days
AED800 for 20 Classes Card valid for 60 days
AED1000 for 1 month unlimited class

I don’t go more than twice a week though so the 10 Classes Card is perfect for me. And look, they give you a free Sephora shower gel and bubble bath if you sign up for any of their bulk classes card:

They do have good facilities as well: shower facilities with all the things you will ever need as if you’re at your own home and a children’s play area.

I shouldn't be posting this I think but I think this just goes to show how well-thought through this place is catering to your every single needs. For my male readers, those are tampons and sanitary pads. :p

I don’t think you can ever find another dance studio which can be as generous as them, providing you all those things as an inclusion to your 50 dirhams per class charge.

As much as I love ballet and The Ballet Centre, I have had a change of heart and will now go for zumba at Dance Fit ME. I know though that I will always go back to the arms of The Ballet Centre, as I have always done but not until they fix their website and open a location nearer to a metro station. :p

Zumba is so much fun, but if I had any coordination skills, I’d also love to try ballet or ballroom dancing:)

It’s funny because I’ve been having the same issue with zumba, the coordination skills. I’ve been dancing ballet since I was about 5 and the hand/feet movements just seem to flow out of me without even me notcing it. BUT FOR ZUMBA, ooohhh la la. It’s so much more fun than ballet though. :p
