Seaside Express Lunch at Sawa And A Surprise Birthday Cake Which Never Came.

Sawa at Marsa Malaz Kempinski

I vowed to myself that I will try to visit every single restaurants in Marsa Malaz Kempinski before the dreaded summer comes. I would love to make the most out of the friendly weather that we now have and enjoy it while dining in one of their al fresco seating areas. Marsa Malaz Kempinski restaurants probably have the best views in Doha, situated at The Pearl Island and surrounded by water, it’s quite tough to beat the views that they have there. Last week, we visited Sawa which is the second restaurant we’ve tried in Marsa Malaz and of course, it’s beautiful.

We were there to try out their Seaside Express Lunch which gives you an appetizer, main course and dessert for the price of QR95 per person. Don’t you just love business lunches? It’s such a great deal considering its location and ambiance.

I had a fresh and light Waldorf Salad for appetizer while my friend AM had air-dried beef ham which she enjoyed as well. Instead of mayonnaise, my Waldorf Salad had a blue cheese dressing which gave it a moist and a melt-in-your-mouth texture against the fresh and crisp apples, lettuce and walnuts. I’m not a big fan of cheese but I do love small quantities of blue cheese, my taste buds love the hint of spiciness in it.

For our main course, we both had corn fed chicken. I loved the morel sauce which gave beautiful flavors to an otherwise bland chicken breast (I generally am not a fan of chicken breast so it has nothing to do with how Sawa served it) and the mashed potato served with it was a great match too. My friend however found her chicken breast quite dry and overcooked, she did agree with me though that the sauce that it came with made it better.

I had a bowl of really fresh fruits for desserts which came with yoghurt and honey while my friend had Eton Mess which she absolutely loved. She was scraping the serving dish with her fingers, if that’s not love then I don’t know what is.

Service was attentive and very friendly. The staff made sure that everything was in order and that we are enjoying our lunch. I loved the whole experience to be honest – the food, the ambiance and the service however I have to admit that one important thing was missed by Sawa. My special request of a surprise birthday cake for my friend.

I have made a reservation for a birthday cake a few days before our scheduled business lunch. I was surprised when they told me that a small cake request is to be billed to us, priced at QR50. It’s not about the price though but it’s the fact that I have requested a small cake numerous times for different occasions from different restaurants and it always comes for free. I went ahead with it though since I was going to miss my friend’s real birthday celebration which was the day prior our business lunch at Sawa, so I was hoping I could make it up to her by surprising her with a birthday cake.

On the day of our lunch though, no cake came. I couldn’t follow up with the staff while we were there as I thought they have planned something special and will bring it to our table after our meal. I waited for the cake to come and delayed our lunch – ate my desserts slowly and took a longer time finishing my coffee. Their business lunch is only until 3pm so at around 3:15pm, the waitress came with our bill which I think was their subtle way to tell us that we have to go since the business lunch time was over.

I was of course disappointed, I cannot believe that a brand such as Kempinski could overlook a simple cake request which I was going to pay for. Cake is probably one of the most common things to be requested from a restaurant – I’ve done it so many times and this was the first time that the request was forgotten. From a Kempinski restaurant of all places. Good thing that it was a surprise and my friend AM had no idea and wasn’t expecting anything. She wasn’t as disappointed as I was of course and she only had good memories from our meal (apart from her dry chicken probably).

I do have to commend the restaurant though as they have personally called me up to apologize that same evening. I was on my way to an event when I saw 2 missed calls from their number and just as I checked my phone, they called up again. They have apologized profusely and offered to make it right. The fact that they didn’t stop contacting me until they have personally reached me made me realize how much they value their customers and that, for me is highly commendable.

So yes, we might have missed a birthday cake and my plan of surprising my friend may have been unsuccessful but we did enjoy our meal in Sawa. More than that though I will highly recommend this restaurant because they do value their customers which I think is such a rarity these days. After finishing the conversation with the Asst. Manager, I had an inclination to visit them again just to thank them for a job well done. 🙂

I don’t think I could live in a city where I dreaded the arrival of summer, but when you have restaurants as tasty as these…

Hahahaha. A friend of mine who lives in Amsterdam is finding it weird whenever I tell him that I’m enjoying the rainy weather but that’s because we don’t have much rain here. :p You wouldn’t want to be in the Middle East during the summer, it’s not the pleasant kind of summer. :p

Yes, it is such a rarity these days for establishments to actually value their customers. I’m truly impressed by the way they handled it because to be honest, I wasn’t upset nor angry (it was just a cake) but I was definitely disappointed.
