We’re not big fans of eating in restaurants inside a mall, I’m not really sure why but I’ve always found restaurants in a mall a bit cold and unappealing. I want something with an outdoor seating and a great ambiance which I think has a direct effect on your overall dining experience. Biella, the Italian restaurant brand from Dubai, opened a new branch in The Pearl Qatar which as we all know is a pretty destination on its own. Its their first branch here in Doha which isn’t in a mall so I was more than interested to try it out.
Located in Plaza Al Hambra in Medina Centrale, Biella restaurant offers such a fantastic scenery in their outdoor dining area. It’s facing an elaborate fountain in front of a Conservatory (what is this Conservatory exactly?), they couldn’t have chosen a better spot to put an Italian restaurant. The whole ambiance transports you to Italy.
My friend AM and I were both very hungry when we arrived, knowing how my eyes are bigger than my tummy when I am in such a state – we left all the decision-making to our very knowledgeable server as to what we’ll order. His recommendations were all spot on, except for one.
For starters, we had gamberoni all’aglio which I wasn’t a big fan of. I just thought that it was missing the “aglio” taste in it, yes – I do know quite a few Italian words when it comes to food. I love garlic and I use it in almost every dishes that I
attempt to cook, my taste palate was looking for that garlic kick in this dish which it didn’t have. Not even a hint of it. Hence, I thought it was bland. My lunch date on the other hand gobbled it all down. As they say, taste is subjective.
Biella focaccia was our second appetizer which was amazing! The dough was so thin and crispy, topped with butter and the garlic flavor that I was looking for on our first dish was heavily compensated on this one. Butter and garlic is a marriage made in heaven sanctified by the Pope himself I believe. I have to admit, I ate most of it because my lunch date ate most of the gamberoni all’aglio anyway. Calling it even.
I was advised to try their best-selling dish for my main course, the scaloppine di vitello. Apart from garlic, I’m also a big fan of mushrooms and this dish had mushroom sauce in it so it wasn’t really hard for our server to convince me to take it. The serving portion was huge, two grilled veal escalopes smothered with so much mushroom sauce. I can feel my jeans getting tight just by looking at it, trust me though – it’s absolutely worth all the calories! No regrets!
My friend AM had osso buco which apparently is a favorite of many. As soon as I posted a photo of it on my Facebook and instagram, a lot of people recognized the dish as they’ve already had it before. The veal meat was so tender you don’t need a knife to cut a portion of it. AM ate it slowly, I can tell she wanted to savor each bite.
Their mocktails were superb too! I had frutti di bosco which was a mix of berries, lime juice, fresh mint and lemonade – very refreshing! It served as my dessert as I’m not really into sweets.
It was great dining experience overall, ambiance was great, food was good and the service was excellent. If only it’s not so far away from where I live, I’d go there everytime just for the ambiance alone.
