My latest lunch quest is the bento box at Hwang in Intercontinental Doha The City, the one near City Center as per my UBER driver. I have been to Hwang many times before including that time when the Greek mother-in-law was here in Doha for a visit. She didn’t like the ramen served here which I thought was delicious, she said soup is only to be served when someone’s sick. Don’t listen to her, she has no idea what she’s talking about.
It’s been a very long time since my last visit in Hwang. Since I was headed to Intercontinental Doha The City anyway for a meeting earlier this afternoon, I figured I should try the bento box at Hwang as well which is a really great lunch deal if you ask me. They have three bento box menu options for you to choose from each with its corresponding prices. It took me quite a while to decide what to order because everything sounds delightful. Finally, after much consideration – I chose option B with a starter from the option A menu.
20 minutes after placing my order, the bento box came. As my appetizer I had the seaweed salad which wasn’t really a good start for me. I think it didn’t have enough sesame flavor which my taste buds were waiting for. It’s a shame because I love seaweed salad and I always order this dish whenever it’s available.
I had duck with Thai red curry and vegetable fried rice as main course and while the duck meat was perfectly cooked, I’d prefer a little bit more coconut milk flavor in the curry. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good dish as it is, it’s just that my taste palate would like it more if the coconut milk taste was a bit stronger which may or may not work for other people. On the other hand, the rice was perfect. I know it’s just rice but a good fried rice would make you want to ask for more servings of it and I had to fight the urge to ask for an extra rice earlier at Hwang.
The bento box also comes with 3 pcs of sushi, a nice surprise but I was already a bit full with my two main courses so I wasn’t able to finish it. For dessert, I had honey melon and sago dessert as I was craving for some sago. I haven’t had sago for a very long time and the small serving of this dessert somehow satisfied that craving.
I love the size of each dishes in this bento box. Enough to end one’s hunger but also not too heavy to make you feel guilty of binge-eating. I’m definitely going back to try out some other dishes in their bento box menu. I may not have raved much about most of the dishes served but it did trigger my Asian taste buds and made me crave for more. I already know what I’ll have next, Indonesian beef rendang as my main course. 🙂
