After my recent trip to Sri Lanka, a lot of people have asked me about applying for a Sri Lankan visa since ALL nationalities (except Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles passport holders) require a visa to Sri Lanka. Worry not though as it’s the easiest visa procedure I have ever taken. EVER.
Sri Lanka visa which they actually refer to as Electronic Travel Authorization or ETA is a applied online. They do not require any documents, you simply fill out the application form from their website and submit it online. You will receive an acknowledgement right after submission and in a few minutes your ETA will be sent to you through email.
You may visit their website: Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization System and click on APPLY. It will redirect you to another page which indicates the terms and conditions of the ETA. You should have your passport ready when applying for the visa as you will need to put its details during the application. You should also have the name and address of the hotel that you’ll be staying in. If you are going around Sri Lanka, then you can just put the details of the first hotel on your itinerary. You have to be careful though while applying for the visa. Once you’ve submitted it, you will be unable to correct any mistakes on the application. You do have the option to review the details before submitting it though. The application fee is USD15 and you can pay for it with your credit card.
The visa issued through this system is valid for use within 3 months upon issuance and you are allowed to stay for 30 days in Sri Lanka. As soon as you’ve received the ETA, you must keep a copy with you when traveling to Sri Lanka as they might ask for the copy of it together with your passport which should have a minimum validity of 6 months, return ticket and sufficient funds during your whole stay in Sri Lanka.
Easy, yes? Enjoy Sri Lanka!
